In covering the objectives of this report, which is to provide an analysis of the way MKAC helps the kidney patients in more ways than one, I learnt a lot more than just how MKAC functioned as a non-profit social service organization. I have gained many priceless lessons that I could not have learnt in a classroom.
For instance, I became more aware of how an illness - kidney problems, many take for granted is affecting Singapore. Although Singapore is considered an advanced country, there are still people in the community that still find it hard to go about their everyday live because of illnesses, financial problems and such. However, that does not mean nothing is done to help these people. MKAC is a fine example of that.
Being in our society so modern is like being in a rat race. Everything is fast paced; someone is always running to be somewhere, getting something, fast.
In spite of this, people are becoming more aware of those less fortunate and blessed than some. They are making time to contribute to society. Especially in times like now; where wars, killings and natural disasters are occurring frequently in other countries. Volunteers go for overseas trips to help rebuild lives that have been shaken from these disasters; there are financial aids, even clothes and food sent over.
What about those in Singapore? How are we making a difference to those around/next to us? Glad to say, there are many different groups/societies that are present in Singapore, focusing in different areas of help. For example, there is aid for those suffering from AIDS. However, this profiling doesn't focus on that. Instead, it focuses on an illness that is often overlooked, but definitely not to be taken any lighter – kidney problems.
In the process of doing this profile has made me realize that I have a lot to be grateful for. I am thankful that I do not suffer from a chronic illness right now. This reminded me to not take anything for granted, not the people around me, not the materials I have and definitely not my health.
It is apparent that the kidney patients had benefited from the activities organized by MKAC. But how have the committee members, staffs and volunteers benefited?
When asked Mr. Ameerali Abdeali, President of MKAC said, and I quote, "There is no difference between us and them, other than just maybe having a kidney problem. Patience, courage, how they face their adversity and still be able to smile, can still work, and raise a family is a source of inspiration. It makes us aware that we too have problems; we should handle the way they handle their problem. Know that everything is manageable."
This made me realize that I too want to be part of the Community Service industry one day. To be constantly inspired by these people, to help them where ever I could and is capable.
Another thing I learnt is that no matter where we are in our lives, as social beings, we naturally want and need a pillar of support, that beacon of light guiding and encouraging us wherever we go, whatever we do. What better place than to find it than in our family. MKAC knowing that it is necessary for these kidney patients to be surrounded by their loved one, MKAC plans several programmes and outings for the kidney patients and their family every year. They are joined by volunteers as well as staffs from MKAC, further emphasizing that it is not something that affects only one person in the family; the kidney patients, it effects others too. MKAC tries to touch not only the kidney patients, but also encourages their families to get involved.
It becomes a FAMILY affair, an acronym of their values; 'F'airness, 'A'ttentiveness, 'M'aking a difference, 'I'ntegrity, 'L'ife long learning and 'Y'earning for Improvement. i'm graduating after 4 more weeks of school.
i know what i want to do. after reading what i wrote 4 months ago, i am assured. i just got to figure out, where to get started.
continue that search. i want to do something that i love. please let me. *prays hard. X)
for the first time in my life, i saw disappointment in his eyes.

you know what im experiencing right now?
what im experiencing right now is tranquility.
what im experiencing right now is serenity.
i hear the thunder clapping, i hear birds chirping, i see ripples created when raindrops fall into the pond and i feel the wind blowing.
beautiful isn't it? i feel so close to nature. and we all know i'm a nature freak.
what im experiencing now, it's peace.
it's a great feeling this thing peace.
hee. :)
it's no wonder the stereotypical miss universe contestants always say, 'for world peace'.
i also want world peace, does that make me miss universe? :DD
anyways,
i was walking into school smiling, and grinning.
yup, you know when you have that fuzzy feeling inside..
you just know that it's all great.
and it's all going to be a-otay.
i've got a test today, and i hope it'll be a-otay.
i pray it will.
but then again, don't we have tests everyday?

i was on the way home with hanim, the skies were dark and gloomy.
it reminded us of dooms day. that in itself made us quiver and want to be better people, better Muslims.
i saw a makcik carrying a bunch of plastic bags in the crowded train i was in. she had to balance her fragile body because she couldn't get a sit or hold onto a pole.
it made me think of how it would be for me when i'm her age.
i saw an old woman walking near my block, she was with an umbrella and 3 plastic backs in one hand, 1 plastic bag in the other.
i felt sorry i couldn't help her.
i saw a dude with a hickey on his neck. he was holding his girlfriend's hands.
it made me go, eeeeks. Astaghfirullah.
it was raining heavily, my umbrella was spoilt. i crossed the road, in the rain.
i am grateful i wear the tudung.
i got the answer to, 'what should i do when i need motivation?' most of the answer related to, 'motivation comes from within.'
i'm ready to get out of this lazy-to-do-anything phase. i'm ready to let it pass.
stoning at inappropriate places is over! HAHAHA. *winks at hanim.
i saw my neighbour while i wanted to enter the lift, he was exiting. we smiled and he greeted someone else under the block.
it feels great to smile at someone, and they smile back. i want to have more of such neighbours.
i heard some people from the philippines talking.
it reminded me of my aunty. she's a convert and has khatam-ed the quran. Alhamdullilah.
i am reading smses and i've got big wide smiles etched on my face.
and i know that i want these feelings to last forever.
